Foot and ankle pain can stem from a variety of sources, each with its unique challenges. Bruises often result from direct trauma, causing discoloration and tenderness. Puncture wounds, which may occur from stepping on sharp objects, can lead to infection if not properly treated. Injuries to ligaments and tendons, such as sprains and strains, are common, and typically result from overuse or sudden twists and turns, leading to swelling and pain. Dislocations, though less frequent, can occur from severe trauma, necessitating medical intervention to realign the bones. Retrocalcaneal bursitis, an inflammation of the bursa located at the back of the heel, often arises from repetitive stress or ill-fitting shoes, causing pain and swelling near the Achilles tendon. Addressing foot and ankle pain effectively requires identifying the specific cause and implementing appropriate treatments. If you have any type of foot or ankle pain, it is suggested that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can offer you effective treatment options.

Children’s Foot Alignment Deformities

Pediatric foot alignment deformities are structural abnormalities in a child’s foot that can affect gait and overall mobility. Common deformities include clubfoot, skew foot, and cavovarus. Clubfoot, where the foot twists inward and downward, can be present at birth and may result from genetic factors or in-utero positioning. Skew foot involves a combination of forefoot adduction and hindfoot valgus, leading to a Z-shaped appearance. Cavovarus foot, characterized by a high arch and inward heel, often results from neuromuscular conditions or inherited foot structure. These deformities can affect children of all ages, with risk factors including family history, neurological disorders, and abnormal fetal positioning. Diagnosis typically involves a thorough physical examination, medical history review, and imaging studies such as X-rays or MRI. Treatment varies based on the type and severity of the deformity and may include stretching exercises, orthotic devices, casting, or surgery. Early intervention is imperative for effective management. If your child has a foot alignment deformity, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist as quickly as possible for an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan.

Congenital foot problems require immediate attention to avoid future complications. If you have any concerns, contact Steven Ginex, DPM of Palm Desert Podiatry. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Congenital foot problems are deformities affecting the feet, toes, and/or ankles that children are born with. Some of these conditions have a genetic cause while others just happen. Some specific foot ailments that children may be born with include clubfeet, polydactyly/macrodactyly, and cleft foot. There are several other foot anomalies that can occur congenitally. What all of these conditions have in common is that a child may experience difficulty walking or performing everyday activities, as well as trouble finding footwear that fits their foot deformity. Some of these conditions are more serious than others. Consulting with a podiatrist as early as possible will help in properly diagnosing a child’s foot condition while getting the necessary treatment underway.

What are Causes of Congenital Foot Problem?

A congenital foot problem is one that happens to a child at birth. These conditions can be caused by a genetic predisposition, developmental or positional abnormalities during gestation, or with no known cause.

What are Symptoms of Congenital Foot Problems?

Symptoms vary by the congenital condition. Symptoms may consist of the following:

  • Clubfoot, where tendons are shortened, bones are shaped differently, and the Achilles tendon is tight, causing the foot to point in and down. It is also possible for the soles of the feet to face each other.
  • Polydactyly, which usually consists of a nubbin or small lump of tissue without a bone, a toe that is partially formed but has no joints, or an extra toe.
  • Vertical talus, where the talus bone forms in the wrong position causing other bones in the foot to line up improperly, the front of the foot to point up, and the bottom of the foot to stiffen, with no arch, and to curve out.
  • Tarsal coalition, when there is an abnormal connection of two or more bones in the foot leading to severe, rigid flatfoot.
  • Cleft foot, where there are missing toes, a V-shaped cleft, and other anatomical differences.
  • Macrodactyly, when the toes are abnormally large due to overgrowth of the underlying bone or soft tissue.

Treatment and Prevention

While there is nothing one can do to prevent congenital foot problems, raising awareness and receiving neonatal screenings are important. Early detection by taking your child to a podiatrist leads to the best outcome possible.

The Intricacies of Foot Anatomy

The human foot is a marvel of engineering, comprising a complex interplay of bones, muscles, ligaments, and blood vessels that work seamlessly to support our weight, absorb shock, and propel us forward. At the heart of this structure lies the arch, which acts as a natural shock absorber, distributing forces evenly as we walk, run, or stand. Supporting the arch are muscles and ligaments that form a dynamic system, constantly adjusting to maintain balance and stability. Meanwhile, the toes play a vital role in balance and propelling us forward, while gripping the ground with each step and helping us navigate uneven terrain. Beneath the surface, a network of blood vessels ensures adequate oxygen and nutrients reach the tissues, supporting their function and repair. Foot pain can happen for a variety of reasons, and it may be connected to a mishap or a foot deformity. If you have foot pain for any reason, it is suggested that you visit a podiatrist who is an expert in treating such conditions.

If you have any concerns about your feet, contact Steven Ginex, DPM from Palm Desert Podiatry. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Biomechanics in Podiatry

Podiatric biomechanics is a particular sector of specialty podiatry with licensed practitioners who are trained to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the foot, ankle and lower leg. Biomechanics deals with the forces that act against the body, causing an interference with the biological structures. It focuses on the movement of the ankle, the foot and the forces that interact with them.

A History of Biomechanics

  • Biomechanics dates back to the BC era in Egypt where evidence of professional foot care has been recorded.
  • In 1974, biomechanics gained a higher profile from the studies of Merton Root, who claimed that by changing or controlling the forces between the ankle and the foot, corrections or conditions could be implemented to gain strength and coordination in the area.

Modern technological improvements are based on past theories and therapeutic processes that provide a better understanding of podiatric concepts for biomechanics. Computers can provide accurate information about the forces and patterns of the feet and lower legs.

Understanding biomechanics of the feet can help improve and eliminate pain, stopping further stress to the foot.

Causes and Symptoms of Plantar Fasciitis

If you have ever felt a stabbing pain in your heel, especially when you first step out of bed in the morning, you might be experiencing plantar fasciitis. This condition, often referred to as painful heel syndrome or runner's heel, occurs when the plantar fascia, or tissue, that connects your heel bone to your toes becomes inflamed or tight. This causes intense discomfort, especially after periods of rest. Although plantar fasciitis is considered a repetitive stress injury, not just athletes are at risk. Anyone who spends a lot of time on their feet or has recently changed their exercise routine may develop plantar fasciitis. The pain is typically gradual, worsening throughout the day, and affects your ability to walk. It may even radiate toward your toes. While weight gain and sudden increases in activity can contribute to plantar fasciitis, it is essential to consult a podiatrist for proper diagnosis and treatment as other factors may be involved. A podiatrist is trained to assess this condition and recommend personalized treatment options, including stretching exercises, orthotic shoe inserts, or pain relief medication. Ignoring the symptoms of plantar fasciitis can lead to chronic heel pain or changes in your gait that may affect other parts of your body. For help in managing plantar fasciitis, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist.

Plantar fasciitis can be very painful and inconvenient. If you are experiencing heel pain or symptoms of plantar fasciitis, contact Steven Ginex, DPM  from Palm Desert Podiatry. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is the inflammation of the thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot, known as the plantar fascia, and causes mild to severe heel pain.

What Causes Plantar Fasciitis?

  • Excessive running
  • Non-supportive shoes
  • Overpronation
  • Repeated stretching and tearing of the plantar fascia

How Can It Be Treated?

  • Conservative measures – anti-inflammatories, ice packs, stretching exercises, physical therapy, orthotic devices
  • Shockwave therapy – sound waves are sent to the affected area to facilitate healing and are usually used for chronic cases of plantar fasciitis
  • Surgery – usually only used as a last resort when all else fails. The plantar fascia can be surgically detached from the heel

While very treatable, plantar fasciitis is definitely not something that should be ignored. Especially in severe cases, speaking to your doctor right away is highly recommended to avoid complications and severe heel pain. Your podiatrist can work with you to provide the appropriate treatment options tailored to your condition.
